About Kithara, the instrument of Greek mythology

It was made of yoke or cross-wood. The strings were tensed to the tailpiece of the resonance body. The number of strings increased gradually from five (8th century BC) to seven (7th century BC) and finally to eleven and twelve (5th century BC). ... "(According to the Encyclopedia of Greek mythology)

"The most notable lyra type is the kithara ... as a divine instrument ... dominates all other ancient musical instruments ... proves by their excellent form ... constructive knowledge of their builders." (N. Dobisch: Die Lyra - ein vergessenes Wunder. Edition Klang-Holz, Berlin 1999, page 77 et seq)
